HIS LAST TRIP
Captain Decided Too Late
RUM-RUNNER’S DEATH
Canada Wants Information
“JOSEPHINE K” INCIDENT
By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright. (Rec. January 27, 8 p.m.)
New York, January 26. A message from Lunenberg (Nova Scotia) states that Captain Cluett’s death following the shelling of the British vessel, Josephine K, by United States coastguards is widely regretted there, where the captain was much admired. His friends • assert he was killed on what ironically would have been his last trip.
Before his departure he told the rector of his church that he disliked rumrunning and was going to leave it. At Washington, Mr. Hume Wrong, Canadian Charge d’Affaires, requested information from the United States Government as to the sinking of the Josephine K. An Ottawa message states that following the report which will be made by the Canadian Legation, the action of the Canadian Government will, doubtless, depend very much upon clarification on the point of how far the vessel was from the shore when challenged and fired upon.
ANOTHER CAPTURE
Shell Strikes Amidships
VALUABLE LIQUOR HAUL
(Rec. January 27, 8 p.m.) New York, January 26.
The New London (Connecticut) coastguard has reported that a cutter in an exciting engagement, captured an alleged British rum-runner, the Temisof St. Johns, Newfoundland, which was discovered entering a bay at the tip of Long Island. The cutter fired warning shots, but the vessel failed to stop, upon which a solid shot was fired and struck the rum boat amidships, wrecking the engines. No one was hurt. The crew and 6000 cases of fine, assorted liquors are being held.
