Springing a leak off the Alicante coast, a coasting vessel, the Lezo, with a crago of carbide, was beached with the assistance of the crews of two fishing smacks. The three crews were unloading the carbide by the light' of torches when a terrific explosion, which was heard for miles away, occurred.

It destroyed the three vessels, while the Lezo’s entire crew of six were killed, seven fishermen were killed, and four seriously injured. Most of the victims were blown to pieces. The injured were picked up some distance from the scene of the explosion.. ___________
