FORTY-MINUTE FIGHT
Giant Mako Hooked Turning the scales at 286 pounds, a mako shark was caught by Dlr. James Stellin, of Wellington, at Cape Brett last week; No sooner had Mr. Stellin cast his line over the side of the launch Lorna Doone when a mako shark, which was showing its dorsal tin above the water, dived and swallowed the bait. The fish immediately came to the surface and made an attempt to swallow also the float. In so doing the fish fouled the angler’s line, and then darted off at a terrific pace, and the line reeled off to a distance of about 200 yards. Just at this moment the line slackened and Mr. Stellin was able to reel in the sahrk.
The angler fought hard for over forty minutes, all the time being kept hard at it pumping his prize. Eventually the mako was brought alongside to be dealt with in accordance with the rules of the club and the gaff bent as if it were a piece of ordinary wire. This l gave the mako a chance to evade capture, but by skilful play a rope was attached to the monster and it was hauled aboard the launch.
Mr. Stellin is having the head mounted and is bringing it to Wellington,
