MEMORIAL FENCE

Hutt Recreation Ground WORK TO PROCEED A large sum of rnoiuiy, something like £2OOO, was left by the late Mrs. Bartosh to the Lower Hutt Borough Council for the purpose of erecting a memorial fence and gates to the Hutt Recreation Ground. Solicitors for the estate advised the council at its last meeting that by realising certain assets the trustees would be able to pay over to the council half the legacy left by the estate. The balance, however, would not be available until May. “In view of the unemployment and the fact that the council might desire to start the work at once, the trustees,” said the letter received by the council, “feel that even at some inconvenience and some slight loss to the estate an effort should be made to make at least a payment on account of the legacy as' early as possible.” The Mayor (Sir Alexander Roberts) said that it would certainly suit the council better for the work to be put in hand at once. There was, however, a difference of opinion between the trustees and the estates committee on the design of the gates. The council decided, in view of the prevailing to proceed as early as possible with the work. Councillor A. Mcßain and the bprough engineer, Mr. A. G. Bush, were deputed to arrange with the trustees concerning the design of the fence and gates.
