FAMOUS SPRINTERS
Carlton & Simpson to Meet
ATHLETIC PARK MATCH
Definite advice has been received that J. A. Carlton, Australian sprint champion, will visit New Zealand shortly and will compete against the American, George Simpson, at a meeting to be held at Athletic Park on February 21. It had been hoped that Carlton would be able to compete at more than one meeting in the Dominion, but a condition of his being allowed to accept the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association’s invitation was that he must be back in Sydney for the New South Wales Amateur Athletic Association’s championships on February 28 and March 7. Thus Carlton will be able to take part in only the .one meeting in New Zealand. Carlton has also received an invitation from the Victorian Amateur Athletic Association to compete in the Victorian State championships on February 14 and 21, but he had expressed a keen desire to meet Simpson in New Zealand, and he has given preference to New Zealand for that reason. Carlton has been in this country before, notably with the New South Wales team in 1927 for the Australian and New Zealand track and field games championship. At that meeting he scored brilliant wins in the 100 yards and 220 yards events. Since his return from the Olympic Games in 1928— where he was unable to strike form—he has put up some sensational performances. including a time of 9 3-ssec. for the 100 yards. The world’s record is 9f sec., though an American record yet to be recognised by the International Amateur Athletic Federation, of 9 2-ssec., was put up some time ago by Frank Wykoff, who beat Simpson by inches in the race.
