CORNWELL CUP

Auckland Keeps Trophy

WINS FOURTH RACE

By Telegraph—Press Association,

Auckland, January 27.

Auckland retained the Cornwell Cup by winning the fourth race for the Cornwell Cup this morning, beating Wellington by 3min. 4sec,, with Lyttelton third.

This morning's race was sailed in the lightest breeze of the contest. The Auckland crew was too keen at the start and! had to return. The Christchurch boa'll carried a new sail, which was only ordered yesterday. The Wellington representative got the best start, and led for the earlier part of the race, with Otago and Lyttelton close up. On the beat to the weather mark, the Auckland skipper sailed with good judgment, keeping bis boat going faster in the light breeze. The others were inclined to sail too close to the wind. The Auckland boat took the lead here and was never headed. The finishing times were as follow:— Auckland, 12hr. 3Smin. 22sec 1 Wellington, 12hr. 41min. 36sec 2 Lyttelton, 12hr. 42min. 45sec. ..... 3 Otago, 12hr. 43min. 55sec. ........ 4 Christchurch. ,12hr. 45min. 47sec. .. 5 Tauranga, 12hr. 46min. Bsec 6 Whangarei, 12hr. 46min. 24sec 7 Mnnukau, 12hr. 50min. 48sec 8

The Hamilton representative retired. The leading boats got a great reception at the finish.
