LATE MR. G. T. LONDON
Tribute to Memory i ■ . • A tribute to the memory of the late Mr. George Thomas London, a former Mayor of Petone, was paid by Mr. D. McKenzie, Mayor of Petone, at last night's meeting of the Petone Borough Council. Mr. McKenzie said that Mr. London had given good service to the borough, and had particularly interested himself in the educational institutions of the district. He was for many years a member of the Wellington Education Board, and was especially’ interested in technical and manual training and vocational guidance. “He was a greatly respected man,” continued the Mayor, “and any person having been in Mr. London’s company could never forget his animation and his intelligence. ..Before he was twenty he was a self-made man. As editor and journalist he industriously kept ahead of contemporary history, and gave to us the wealth of his well-stored mind. His general knowledge in literature was-remark-able,’and his composition in pure English was still more remarkable.” MORE ACUTE THAN EVER Lower Hutt Unemployment In reply to a question at last night’s meeting of the council, the Mayor, Sir Alexander Roberts, said the unemployment position in the Lower Hutt Borough was more acute than ever. Last Saturday there were 465 men registered as unemployed. “It is impossible to get work for all of them,” the Mayor said. “The only way for the Unemfployment Board to deal with the problem is by the payment of sustenance.”
