THROUGH SOUTH AFRICA
Hutt Resident’s Trip
An interesting tour of parts of South Africa was recently made by Miss Mliriel Rathbone, of Lower Hutt. The tour lasted some mouths and the itinerary included Durban, where: although it was June, delightful summer weather prevailed, thence down the coast to Port Elizabeth. From there a journey was made to the Drakenbury mountains. The climb to the summit of these mountains takes three days, and is done on Basuto ponies.
“The view from the summit,” said Miss Rathbone, to a “Dominion” reporter, “is magnificent, and includes three States.” Ladysmith, Johannesburg, Bulawayo and the Victoria Falls were next visited, followed by the canoe trip to the Cataract, and on to Livingstone, The Marine Drive, mineral baths, and wealth of gorgeous wild flowers at Cape Town all claimed the interest of the tourist, as also did Rhodes’s former residence, “Groofeschuur,” and his memorial and burial place—“ World's View”—situated as it is on a rugged hill. At Kimberley the diamond mines and factory were the chief source of interest,: and the garden route from George' to Cape Town was outstanding in its beauty.
