KARORI STREAM
Suspected Septic Tank
Following on the report in “The Dominion” on Monday last that there was no fishing to be got in the Karori stream below the City Corporation’s septic tank, the council of the Wellington Acclimatisation Society decided last evening to ask the city engineer if anything was being done in the matter. Mr. R. H. Nimmo said it seemed a great pity that such a beautiful stream in close proximity to the city should, be polluted. He could remember when the stream was well stocked. It was the experience of most anglers that the fish had now been exterminated. It was time some action was taken. Dr. Anson: It ought to be explained why a septic tank should pollute a stream.
Mr. Nimmo: If the trouble is due to the tank then it is a reflection on us to sit here and not take action. The secretary, Mr. C. I. Dasent, said that some months ago the water in the stream was analysed by Captain Phillips. There appeared to be something wrong with the filters of the tank. The city engineer was communicated with, anil a promise was given that alterations would be made at any early date. “Apparently we have not reached the ‘early date’ yet,” added Mr. Dasent. Dr. Anson: It looks as if they must be using disinfectant. Mr. Dasent: I don’t know whether the fish have been destroyed or not. At any rate they have been driven away. Mr. S. G. Nathan said that the same thing was happening in the Porirua stream. Mr. Nimmo said that in the Karori stream there were plenty of fish in the higher reaches, but lower down they were not thriving. There was something wrong.
