FARMERS’ ENEMIES
Stoats, Weasels & Ferrets REMOVAL OF PROTECTION A suggestion has been made to the director of agriculture by Mr. L. O. H. Tripp, president of the Wellington Acclimatisation Society, that the protection of stoats, weasels and ferrets should be removed in districts where the farmers are agreeable to such a course. At a meeting of the council of the society last evening Mr. Tripp said that some time ago he wrote to the secretary of the Farmers’ Union in Wellington and suggested that he should see if the different branches would not agree to the removal of the protection of stoats, weasels, and ferrets in their respective districts. The secretary of the Farmers’ Union had informed him that the branches in favour of the removal of protection were Wantranui. Pelorus, North Canterbury. Mid-Canterbury and Marlborough, The Otago branch replied that the matter would be discussed at the next meeting of the executive. Hawke's Bay, Wellington Central. Southland and Oamaru were not in favour of the protection being removed. “I have written to the director of agriculture and suggested that the protection should be removed in those districts where the farmers are in agreement with the removal of protection,” Mr. Tripp said. “Protection should also be removed in all sanctuaries and scenic reserves.”
