DUCHESS SAILS
Departs for Auckland UNDER OWN STEAM The ferry steamer Duchess, which has been sold by the Eastbourne Borough Council to Auckland owners, went to sea from Miramar wharf early yesterday morning. The rtiip left port the previous evening in tow of the Government motor-ship Maui Pomare. When the two vessels reached the heads they met a strong southerly swell and the Duchess’s cable which was shackled to the Maui Pomare’s tow-line parted with the strain. The Maui Pomare was in no way responsible for the breakage and did all that was possible in the circumstances. Captain Bolton stood by the Duchess until he was assured by the master of the Duchess that his services were no lon-er required and the latter ship put back to port under her own steam. It is understood that an interesting position has arisen in connection with the Duchess’s departure for Auckland under her own steam. It is stated that she had a permit to proceed there only in tow of another ship. The vessel is fully provisioned and has coal and water, etc., for the passage.
