PLUNKET NURSES’ WORK

' > Sub-committees Formed The monthly meeting of the Royal New Zealand Society for the Health of Women and Children was held on Friday last, when there were present: Mrs. Henry Hall in the chair, Mesdames Aiken, Richardson, Miller, Oxenham, Hodson, McEldowney, McLean, Luke, Cook, Mirams, Hott, Burgess, Leach, Collins, Maylor, Hoggard, Corkhill, Binet-Brown, Good, Bullock, Wood, Parton, Tythe-Brown, Misses Cameron and Barnett. Apologies were received from Mesdames' Johnson, Hassell, Fotheringham, White, Wilson, Ralph, Hawkins, Davidson, White, and Paterson. The Plunket nurses' report was as follows :—Total number of new cases, 158; total number of visits to homes, 1903; total nutnber of visits to offices, adults 2096, babies 1571, children 280; detailed as follows at: headquarters, adults 648, babies 850, children 97; Eastbourne, 79, 57, 19; Seatoun, 74, 74, 5; Miramar, 109, 4)6, 14; Lyall Bay, 168, 151, 14; Hataitai 120, 89, 19; Newtown, 102, 87; Island Bay, 87, 74, 6; Brooklyn. 128, 110, 17; Kelburn, 41, 33, 9; Karori, 148, 126, 21; Northland, 61, 46, 13; Wadestown, 62, 50, 13; Ngaio, 94, 82, 6; Khandallah, 90, 69. 16; Johnsonville, 65, 59, 3; Tawa Flat, 2,2; Porirua, 8,8; Plimmertou, 10, 8..... . .

o. Visits to homes were paid in all the above districts, and in addition to homes in Kaiwarra, Titahi Bay, Paremata, and Pukerua Bay. No. of babies wholly. 1 , breastfed, 119; No. of babies | partially breastfed, 22; No. of babies, artificially fed, 17; No. of ex-pectant-mothers, new cases, 33; expectant mothers still under supervision, 193; return visits of : expectant mothers to antenatal' clinic, 254. The . nurses thank the women who motored them during the month, also Mes-dames-'Wilson and Caldwell for flowers, and Mesdames Whyte, Tate, Harrison, and the Misses-Normand and Burnett for parcels'of clothing. The report of matron of Truby King Karitane Hospital stated: Admissions for the month were 11 mothers and 20 babies. Cases were admitted from 'Westport, Pahiatua, Whangarei, Petone,. Lower Hutt, and Wellington suburbs. The largest number in residence for any one day was 6 mothers and 25 babies; 032 visitors were shown over the hospital during the month. The matron thanks Mrs. Evans for woollen garments, the N.Z. Rennet Co. for “Rgnco,’!r Mrs. McEldowney for books and jam, Sir Truby King for flowers and magazines, and Mrs. Hott for old blankets and flowers. Mrs. Hall gave a brief account of the resolutions passed during the conference which affected the local branch. Mrs. Hall was granted three months leave of absence from the committee. The committee placed on record their . appreciation of the* general manager of the U.S.S. Co.’s (Mr. D. A. Aiken) kind action in donating £33/5/3, being the proceeds from the inspection of the s.s Monowai. ,■ ? The committee resolved as iu previous years, to hold no meetings in January, and to meet again on the first Friday in February. Mrs. Hall reported that meetings of residents had been held in the Island Bay and.Newtown districts, from which sub-cpminittees have been formed. In Island Bay two meetings had been held at the residence of Mrs. Evatt, which were attended by members of the central executive, who explained the purpose of organising committees in the local areas visited by the Pliinket nurses. Mrs. Emerson was elected president, with Mrs. Evatt: as acting-secretary. Several ladies from Newtown have met the executive, and have kindly promised to organise the work in that district early in the coming year, Mrs. Binet-Brown undertaking the secretarial duties to commence the committee. The central committee is most grateful to these ladies, as the formation of committees in these districts will complete the chain of sub-committees into winch Wellington has been divided for the purposes of closer and more intensive organisation. , , Subscriptions Acknowledged. The death of Ada, wife of the late Maharajah Duleep Singh, at Ferring, Sussex, was announced on August 7. Formerly Miss Ada Do-glas Wetherill, she married the Maharajah in Paris in 1889, two years after the death of his first wife. The Maharajah died in Paris in 1893. He acceded to the throne of the Punjab when a child. In 1853 he renounced the Sikh religion and became a Christian. Eleven years later he married a young Protestant woman at Alexandria. For many years lie lived in England, and when he married Miss Wethcrill, ho bought her an estate at Elvedon, Suffolk, _for_ £283,000.
