JANIE SEDDON
Steamer to be Laid Up AN ECONOMY MOVE It is freely stated on the waterfront that as a further measure of economy in the Defence Department, tho steamer Janie Seddon is to be laid up indefinitely and the crew paid off. Apart from certain work in connection with harbour defence works, which take up very little of her time, the chief employment for the Janie Seddon in recent years has been as a tender for the port health officer and the Customs officials to meet'overseas ships arriving at’ Wellington. The vessel also makes periodical visits to Somes Island for the Health Department, and on infrequent occasions she gets employment in shifting coal hulks. It is stated that the Agricultural Department, which is also interested in Somes Island, does not make use of the Janie Seddon when its officials require to go there, finding it cheaper to engage a launch for the purpose.
