The Whitechapel by-election, brought about by the death of Mr. H. Gosling (Labour), resulted as follows: —

Mr. James Hall (Labour) .... 8,544 Mr. Barnett Jenner (Liberal) . 7,445 Mr. Loel Guinness (Con.) .... 3,735 Mr. Harry Pollitt, a Communist, polled 2106 votes.
