OSCAR GARDEN

Arrangements for Welcome CIVIC RECEPTION TO-DAY Mr. Oscar Garden, the Christchurch aviator, who recently flew from Croydon (England) to Mascot (Sydney), will arrive here from Sydney by the Ulimaroa early this afternoon. Immediately upon landing at Queen’s Wharf, about 1.30 p.m., he will be welcomed in B Shed by the chairman of the Harbour Board, Mr. J. W. McEwan. Other speakers will be the Director of Air Services, Wing-Commander S. GrantDalton, and the president of the Wellington Aero Club. While the Harbour Board reception is taking place, the aeroplane "Kia Ora,” in which he flew from England to Australia in 17 days, will be disembarked, an placed on a lorry. A procession will then be formed, and Mr. Garden and his machine will pass through the streets of the city. The Tramways Band will head the procession, which will go by way of Customhouse Quay, Willis Street, Manners Street, and Lower Cuba Street, to the Town Hall.

The Mayor, Mr. G. A. Troup, will accord the aviator a civic welcome in the Concert Chamber at 3 p.m. The Minister of Defence, Hon. J. G. Cobbe, will be one of the speakers, and will present again to Mr. Garden the kiwi which was presented to him in Australia, on behalf of the people of New Zealand. The Mayor asks employers to allow their staffs time off to attend this function, and all citizens to join in the city’s welcome. To-morrow morning, at 11 o’clock, Mr. Garden will meet Cabinet at Parliament Buildings, and will be entertained to morning tea. In the evening, he will be the guest of the English-Speaking Union. The Vacuum Oil Company is arranging a special ceremony for the aviator on Thursday night, and he will speak from broadcast station 2YA at 9 p.m. On Friday night, the Wellington Aero Club will hold a banquet, at which the aviator will be the guest of honour. A number of prominent citizens will be present at the function.
