BELLS OF MEMORY

Not Going to Buenos Aires About a fortnight ago it was suggested that the Wellington carillon, now erected in Hyde Park, London, should be lent to the promoters of the British Empire Exhibition to be held at Buenos Aires, Argentina, early next year. Iho Carillon Society approved of the bells going to the exhibition as a New Zealand contribution subject to the Government defraying the cost of transport, erection, dismantling, etc., and taking all precautions to safeguard the bells. The society put the onus of accepting the proposal on the Prime Minister, Right Hon. G. W. Forbes, in London, as he would be in touch with the London committee of the exhibition which made the suggestion. It seems that the cost incidental to sending the carillon to Buenos Awes and getting it back would be about £1 <5O. ami as the Prime Minister could not see his way to agree to that expenditure the prnnosnl will be abandoned. The bells are now being packed ready for shipment to Wellington on December 4. _____
