GOOD RUNNING

Athletic Park Sports PLEASANT WEATHER Athletes who took part in the meeting held by the Wellington Centre ot the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association at Athletic Park last evening were favoured with extremely pleasant weather conditions. There was an absence of wind, and the brief programme of events was put through in mild sunshine, except for the last five or ten minutes, when the sun sank behind the hills. 1 , The oval track was not m very good condition, however, although the sprint track, nearer the centre of the ground, seemed to have improved slightly. Jhe ground \vill be a difficult one to get into first-class order. The programme included three handicap events over an unusual combination of distances —120 yards, 600 yards and two miles. No cycle events were held, through the absence of a cycle track, and neither the walking event nor the hurdles even drew any entries. This will be made up for, no doubt, at next Monday’s meeting at the Basin Reserve, the programme for, which includes cycle events and a mile walk handicap. It is difficult to understand why there was not a greater attendance _of the publie. The programme was an interesting one, as is the case with all Monday evening meetings. There is no charge for admission either at Athletic Park or at the Basin Reserve, where cycling events are held as well as track events, and the meetings draw all the best athletic talent in Wellington. It is thought that when it becomes more generally known that Monday evening meetings are being held they will regain the popularity which they once enjoyed. Leading Performers. Of the performers last evening, C. Jenkins, the well-known sprinter, who ■was making his first appearance, ■ won his heat in the 120 yards and came second in the final. The final was won narrowly by T. Pickering off the 7-Jyd. mark, who showed plenty of power in his stride, particularly when winning his heat. He was placed second last week in the 100 off 54yds. IL Eades, an Olympic club junior, scored a runaway victory off 6yds. in the junior event. In the 600yard handicap V. Williamson, of the Wellington Club, raced home ahead of the field and was placed for the third time this "season. L. A. Sinclair, of the Scottish Harriers, ran a good race in the two miles open and reached home ahead of C. J. Gibbons, the Wellington runner, who is striking good form. The men’s relay brought first-class running, especially from Fleming, who took the eye as he set out to wear down successfully a gap of seven of eight yards. The women, as usual, were present in force, and three heats were required in the 120 yards event.' Miss S. Corbett, of the Wellington club, won both her heat and the final, off the 9iyd. mark. Credit must go to Miss. B. Battersby, of the Athletic club, who ran third in the final. It is her sixth placing this season. Miss Moore, too, of the Miramar club, who came second, was placed for the fourth time this season. The women’s relay drew four entries and was won by Wellington. Times for'" the events were satisfactory but not sensational. The best time perhaps was that registered in the 600 yards. Aiglance over previous performances reveals careful handicapping in all the events, hut this was fairly clear from the finishes.
