PRICES FORCED DOWN
Move Throughout Italy SEQUEL TO SALARY CUT (Rec. November 23, 5.5 p.m.) Rome, November 22. Following a 12 per cent, salary reduction, a regular drive has been initiated throughout Italy to reduce the cost of living. Meetings were held to-day in every city and township in order to readapt local economy with a view to reducing the prices of bread, meat, vegetables, and rent. New prices already submitted to the Governor of Rome show a reduction of from 10 to 12 per cent, on foodstuffs. Scores of landlords have announced rent reductions. At presenfall changes are voluntary, but public opinion is so strong that anybody withholding would find himself hounded out of business. The vigorous campaign has proved so effective that salary reductions already are balanced by the new spending value of the lira.
