WAR ON GANGSTERS
Hoover Seeks Authority APPEAL TO CONGRESS (Rec. November 23, 5.5 p.m.) New York, November 22. The “New York World’s” Washington correspondent states that President Hoover will ask Congress for additional authority to deal with the gangster, situation throughout the United States. Besides prosecution for failure to pay income taxes, a nation-wide compaign against so-called racketeers who blackmail legitimate businesses to the extent of many millions of dollars has been launched. Congressmen who recently returned from their districts found constituents alarmed over the boldness of gangsters and wnnt the Federal Government to go as far as It can in a war against them.
