MOERA’S NEEDS Stormwater Drainage Storm-water drainage was among the things discussed by the Moera Ratepayers’League last week. “The council,” stated the chairman, “has said it would back us up if we want the Government to get the stormwater drainage done without any cost to the council.” One member considered that properties in Moera were depreciating in value because of the lack of stormwater drainage, and that the district was the laughing stock of New Zealand. — Mention was made that Councillor A. Mcßain, chairman of the works committee of the Lower Hutt Borough Council, Was greatlv surprised when he saw how very bad the conditions were at Moera, so far as stormwater drainage was concerned. ‘ . It was suggested by one member that a deputation frohi Moera should approach the council in connection With stormwater drainage. Both the Government and the council, it was said, should have taken more care , with the settlement in the first plpce. “If we wait for the council to do the work we will wait a lifetime,” said the speaker. “Seo the condition of Randwick Road. ( What has the council done to repair it?” “It is impossible.” said another speaker, “for the people to put iu stormwater drainage because they have not the money. Even if they had the money, it is possible they would not be allowed to do it.” Mr. Walter Nash, M.P., is to arrange for a deputation to wait on the Minister Of Public Works.
BOROUGH CONSTITUTION Ward System Discussed The people of Moera are not satisfied with the hearing they get from the Lower Hutt Borough Council. At last municipal elections their ticket was swamped. Last week the Moera Ratepayers’ League discussed whether it would not be better if the ward system was inaugurated in the Lower Hutt’ borough. It was thought that Moera would get better representation on the council if such a system, operated. It was pointed out there were a thousand people in Moera and that they were not getting anything done for themselves. The discussion which ensued was inconclusive, although the general opinion was that the ward system in. boroughs was not entirely satisfactory. A suggestion wasr made, that a partial remedy might be effected by the system of proportional' voting. . Mention was made that the Waiwetu portion of the - borough Was admirably served by Councillor D. S. Patrick.
