Upper Hutt Sewerage
Sir, —Your correspondent's paragraphs in to-day’s issue re Upper Hutt water and drainage are gratifying to a great extent, except in the monetary sense. Upper Hutt is a struggling, suburb, and its residents are mostly men who work for a living outside its area, and are burdened with a loan on their small section, and it would be a great mistake to load them with further loans in the present position of their incomings. Everyone knows that a sewerage scheme would be au advantage, but doubt its expedience at present. Moreover, to sewerage Upper Hutt borough bears no comparison to I’etone or Lower Hutt—they are a compact nest, whereas Upper Hutt borough is one long stretch of five miles, about one-quarter mile in width in its average. Let no one be deluded by what the clerk has taken the liberty to state about costs, which, by the way, is not in my opinion a question for the borough clerk to declare upon, he being a servant of the whole of the ratepayers (but possibly it was by way of private comment and not intended for propaganda). There are a great number of the ratepavers who are viewing with gravity the trend of some of those who are endeavouring to lead us. As one of the older residents I would call upon my fellow ratepayers to beware. —I am, etc., E. CONOMIST. Upper Hutt, November 17.
