Free Gift Schemes
Sir.—The letter you publish this morning from “G.8.W.,” reminds me of the warm discussion which “The Discount Trading Co.” caused some thirty years ■ ago, and in which I took a very active — perhaps a leading part. A newspaper discussion waxed furiously for some weeks; the matter was then brought up in Parliament, and a Bill passed prohibiting the company’s operations, which then closed down. Then, as now, I saw no harm in retailers giving cash discounts. One of the oldest firms in town has given discount coupons for many years; but —a big but—they redeem them either in goods or cash. But then —as now—l could see no sense m
retailers supplying a discount trading company with capital. A retailer doing a turnover of £5OOO per year pays for his coupons -24 per cent., or £125 annually. From this the company pays staff salaries, rent, etc. How much of this comes back to the purchaser? On the above modest basis, if ten retailers go in for the scheme, the company scoops £1250 per year.—l am., etc., p Wellington, November 17.
