“ONCE A SCOUT-”
Dominion Leader’s Idea A GREAT BROTHERHOOD Desire to make the motto “Once a Scout, always a Scout,” an ambition more than a platitude was expressed by Dr. P. Clennell Fenwick, C.M.G., Dominion Chief Commissioner, in an address to the annual meeting of the Dominion Council of the Boy Scouts’ Association yesterday. • “I think that every one who cares for this beautiful country must be anxious that those who follow us shall be good men worthy of their heritage,” said Dr, Fenwick. “I can conceive no better way of training the young people of to-day to grow up into good men and women than by the lessons that are taught in the Boy Scouts and Girl Guide movements. When we reflect, that the Scouts of today will be the rulers of to-morrow, it is a matter of pride to be connected with the great work which is being done so quietly and ‘so efficiently among the children of New Zealand. “I feel,” added the speaker, “that when a Scout passes out of his troop we should not lose sight of him. I know that his training will have a good effect on his whole future life, but I earnestly wish that we could keep in touch with him. My idea is that when a boy is- too old for a troop or Rover, he should have an opportunity of joining a Dominion Scout Association, that we should try to help each boy to find the work that is best suited to his character, that we should take a deep interest in his future, and that every Scout should know that be belongs to a great, brotherhood, the bonds of which are not loosened when he passes out of his troop.”
