LESS TRAVELLING

Bookings for Next Year

FEWER GOING OVERSEAS Usually by this time in the year’ those associated with the business of tours abroad are able to gauge what results are to accrue next season—February, March, April, and May—the months when most people make their effort to get three summers in succession by taking a trip to England and the Continent. As a _ rule the accommodation on the regular liners from Australia and New Zealand is fairly well booked up until the end of the year, hut this is not the case this year, as, although there were a good many inquiries earlier in the year, there has been in a number of cases either no response at all, or those inquiring have cut down their requirements. It is noticeable this year that the chief falling-off has been in the booking of first-class passages, due' probably to a feeling of insecurity on the part of the public, and in Australia to the economic obstacles placed in the way of people intending to spend‘their money abroad. This may benefit New Zealand during the summer, as there are a great many people in the Commonwealth desirous of leaving Australia during the mid- summer and, put to the necessity of economising a little this year, they may come to New Zealand. Bookings for Home next year have fallen away definitely, as compared with last year, which was exceptionally good, and the outstanding feature of the booking that is being done is the number taking advantage of the one-class steamers from Australia via Suez. The opinion has been expressed locally that a good many people from New Zealand who ordinarily travel first or second class are contenting themselves with one-class accommodation. .
