Unemployment
Sir, —May I challenge your correspondent’s (M, E. Brown’s) statement under the heading of “Unemployment,’’ “that the majority of unemployed will not go to the country to work”? Surely M.E.B. does not expect a married man to keep a home and family, besides clothe himself, on £2 a week? But even ruling out married meu, I am sure your correspondent’s majority is not formed of men able to take such work and wages as he and other farmers offer. I personally know quite a number of men, single and otherwise, who would be only too pleased of the opportunity. I think it very unfair to judge this country’s unemployed by one sample, and am sure if M.E.B. speculated a shilling and advertised in “The Dominion,’’ givingxfull particulars, he would soon find out his mistake. I have been on the employed roll myself for some months and am among those willing to go anywhere.— I am, etc., FILLARY. Wellington, October l(i.
