PROGRESSIVE BODY

Olympic Athletic Club

WEEKLY SPORTS APPROVED

“From the inception of this club it has gone ahead well,” said the chairman, Mr. T. W. Steel, in moving the adoption of the annual report at the annual meeting of the Olympic Amateur Athletic Club on Thursday. It was a tribute to the work done by the founders of the club that it was commencing now its ninth year after eight years of real progress, said Mr. Steel. He referred to the fact that members of the club had been responsible during the season for no fewer tljan ICO placings in handicap and championship events. This was a record, he felt, that few clubs could equal and snoke' volumes for the good work done by members. Seconding the adoption of the report, Mr. D. Paris, assistant secretary and club captain, said that there was no doubt that Mr. H. Glover had been the backbone of the club since its inception. Mrs. Glover, too, was one of the club’s greatest supporters. Mr. Pans urged members to take training seriously and earnestly, attending regularly and doing their work thoroughly. The club, he said, had” inaugurated in Wellington the system copied by other clubs, but members last season, strange to say, had not taken full advantage of th? excellent coaching that was provided for them. Mr. Paris referred to the section of the report in which the performances of the club's young walker, A. K. Hill, were mentioned. Mr. Paris had looked over all the available times' registered in the British Empire and in America and had found that Hill’s time for the mile walk had been bettered —and that narrowly—on only two occasions. As far as the Dewar Shield and Oates Baton meetings were concerned, Mr. Paris thought that the Wellington centre officials had rather let things go last year. To his mind dates were available, but the centre let the meetings “go by the board.” Mr. Paris spoke of the series of weekly meetings which the centre proposed to hold during the season. The annual meeting of the centre took place on October 20, he said, and it would be well if the club’s delegates to the centre knew the attitude of the club to such meetings. The meetings, he explained, which would be a return to the meetings of a few years ago, would be held at the Basin Reserve on Monday evenings, starting at 6 p.m. and ending at 7 p.m. The delegates were directed to express the club’s full approval of the plan. It was suggested, too, that the delegates should urge on the centre the necessity for having some jumping pit available for Wellington athletes. The club is to hold a return sports meeting with the Lower Hutt Amateur Athletic and Cycling Club. The election of officers resulted as follows:—Patroness, Mrs. H. Glover;’'patron and life member, Mr. H. Glover; president, Mr. T. W. Steel I vice-presidents, Messrs. E. A. Shaw, L. Bond. W. Boxhall, A. R. Morris, W. A. Thomson, L. Lovell, J. Sharp, W. McCartie.
