Convicted Vagrants
FARMERS PROTEST Dominion Special Service. Palmerston North, October 10. At a meeting of the New Zealand Dairy Farmers’ Union, to-day, concern was expressed at the action of certain magistrates in sending vagrants into the country. After discussion the chairman, Mr. N. Campbell, and Mr. P. J. Small,. were authorised to interview the Minister for Justice regarding the position. Mr. L. Poupard, who brought the matter forward, referred to several recent cases. He said that there was more danger to country people from undesirables than city dwellers, as houses in the country were more isolated and assistance could not be obtained bo easily. He referred to a letter received from Sir T. M. Wilford in 1929, when the matter was before the meeting.
In spite of the Minister’s assurance, that system applied _ only .to country workers, who. were being returned to. the country, or persons to whom temptations of the city life were irresistible. There had been recent instances.
