MORE DISMISSALS

Railwaymen To Go

MINISTER QUESTIONED Forty Notices Sent Out Further notices of dismissal issued to railwaymen led to a question on the point from Mr. Waiter Nash (Lab., Hutt) to the Minister of Railways, Hom W. A. Veitch, in the House of Representatives yesterday. Mr. Nash asked the Minister whether his policy, was to dismiss more men and he reminded the Minister that he bad said on July 18 that no more men would be dismissed. “It is true that I said on July 18 that for the time being no more men would be dismissed,” replied the Minister. “But surely the honourable member will realise that no Minister can make a promise that for all time the services of no men will be dispensed with.” Mr. Nash: Forty notices have gone out. The Minister said representations on the subject had been made to him that morning by the Railway Tradesmen’s Association. He had agreed to consider the representations, and would let Mr. Nash know the decision. Mr. W. J. Jordan- (Lab., Manukau) • Are you dismissing any more men from the workshops? • The Minister: That will depend entirely on the position as it arises. I will employ as many men as the available money will permit me.
