COAL BY-PRODUCTS

Benzine, Bitumen, and Tar A suggestion that by making greater use of the by-products of coal the Dominion would benefit materially both from a monetary and employment point of view, was made by Mr. H. Semple (Lab., Wellington East) in the House of Representatives last evening. Mr. Semple said that there was at present a huge adverse trade balance with America amounting to £5,500.000. Last year the Dominion imported £1.500.000 worth of benzine. He believed there was enough coal in the country to provide all the benzine, bitumen, and tar products that were needed for domestic use. The Government should undertake to set up six works in various parts of the country for the treatment of coal and the extraction of by-produets. These works would employ about 1000 men, and would result in the production of about 600.000 tons more coal than at present. This would also serve to increase employment at the mines and on the transport services.
