WANGANUI NOTES
Wanganui, June 13. The Mayor of Wanganui, Mr. W. J. Rogers) and Miss Rogers, the deputymayor (Mr. G. Darbyshire) and Mrs. Darbyshire, and Canon and Mrs. Williams, were the guests of their Excellencies at luncheon at the Rutland Hotel on Thursday, prior to their departure for New Plymouth. At the Aramoho boating shed next Tuesday evening the annual presentation of trophies will taka place. Mr. H. G. Whyte, of the Wanganui courthouse staff, was presented on Monday afternoon with a silver entree dish prior to his marriage, which took place on Wednesday. The magistrate, Mr. J. H. Salmon, made the presentation, wishing Mr. Whyte and his future wife every happiness. ■ The works committee of the Wanganui City Council reported at last night’s meeting as having conferred with Mr.. Mawson, the Director of Town Planning, in company with representatives from the Law Society, in reference to the proposed site for a courthouse. The director strongly recommended the site on which the present band practice room stood as being the most suitable location, and the one which conformed to the general principles and layout of the city’s future civic centre. Acting on the director’s expert advice, the committee recominended that the council and the domain board agree to the erection of the building on this position. „ , Three country clubs, Sanson, Ohakea and Mangamoho, in addition to the Wanganui clubs, have entered for the miniature rifle shooting competition commencing this week. Watters (Palmerston North), and Trevor Thomas will be the soloists at the Choral Society s production of “Maritana” to be given in Wanganui next week. The Wanganui City Council intend to proceed with the work of fitting up a children’s library in the old gas office in Ridgway Street at an early date. . At St. Barnabas’ Church, Durie Hill, Wanganui, on Wednesday evening, the Rev. D. J. Davies, of Greytown, preached the yearly patronal sermon. After the service a social gathering was held. The Rev. Davies returned to Greytown on Thursday. “That all main line railway locomotives be fitted with electric headlights, as the brilliant beams would provide a warning for motorists,” is a suggestion to be forwarded to the North Island Motor Union from the Wanganui Automobile Association.
