A WARNING TO POETS
A story is told in the “World Press News,” which may be taken as a warning -to poets. “The wife of a local squire,” says the Writer, “had sent to me a poem for publication at ‘our usual rates.’ My paper could not afford to pay. for the poetry, neither dare I risk offending the lady by returning it. I put the matter before my proprietor, a farmer who had bought the paper as a business speculation, and he settled it :—
“‘Madame. —Thank you for so kindly sending us the poem. We should not dream of charging you for its insertion as we are only too happy to have the honour of publishing it.’ .
