SUTCLIFFE GOES A-RIDING

...An amusing experience that befell Herbert Sutcliffe whjle he was in Australia was related by the famous cricketer himself at an Epsom brotherhood meeting. “I had a riding lesson,” he said. “My friend, after instructing me for two minutes, started his own horse off at a tremendous pace, and my horse followed suit. Fortunately, my horse happened to be a little faster, so I drew alongside and shouted, ‘For heaven’s sake stop, man.’ He pulled up, and my horse stopped. How on earth I managed to stay on I could not tell you. The next 1 day I could not ride at all. I think I stood up longer that day than anyone else in Australia.”
