Sliss Enid Bell, Sliss Cara Johnstone and Sliss Lulu Dyer, who have been in Rotorua for the golf' tournament, have returned to Wellington. A marriage of interest to New Zealanders was celebrated recently when Sirs. J. St. John Buckley was married to Sir Alfred Karney Young, formerly Chief Justice of Fiji, now of England. Sirs. Buckley has many friends in New Zealand, and revisited this epuntry a few years ago..

In the course of a letter to a friend in Dunedin Miss Irene Vanbrugh writes: “The lovely memorial stone over my dear husband’s grave is now in place. Sir Edwin Lutyens has designed it so beautifully. and I feel it is one of the greatest tributes shown to him, both as artist and ‘gentleman.’ lam very happy about it.”

RED CROSS SOCIETY i The monthly meeting of the Wellington executive of the Red Cross (war-time) was held yesterday afternoon, Mr. D. G. Clark presided. There were also present: Lady filyers, Miss Low, filr. Bath, Mr. S. F. "Wright, Hon. Dr. W. E-. Collins, Mr. G. Shirtcliffe, and Mr. Galloway (secretary). An apology was received from filrs. Herzog, ; A request fol’ installation of radio at one of the villus at "Porirua was referred to the Red Cross visitors for decision, with the superintendent, it not being considered withip the province of the War-,time Red Cross. Hall acknowledging the sympathy of the committee in the death of her brother. , The report from Pukeora sanatorium showed that the work there was going on smoothly. The sum of £2/16/9 had been received by sales from the vocational workshop. The secretary reported that sunplies of films- had been arranged for from the Film Exchanges Association. A- hearty vote of thanks to the association was passed for supplying films free to the institutions under the care of the Red Crops. The. treasurer’s statement showed a balance of £9933/16/5. PLUNKET SOCIETY At the monthly meeting of tho Royal New Zealand Society for the. Health of Women and Children, held on Friday, Lady Hosking, who presided, welcomed filrs. G. Johnson back after her absence abroad. . . The Plunket nurses report gave the following figures:—Total number of new cases 151; total number of visits to homes, 1709; total number of visits to offices, 2480 adults, 1886 babies, 266 children. Analysis of feeding: Number of babies wholly breastfed, 116; partially breastfed, 19: artificially fed, 16: expectant mothers, new cases, ui ; return visits ot" ‘ expectant mothers to AnteNatal Clinic, 289; expectant mothers still under supervision, 243. BIBLE SOCIETY

MIRAMAR BRANCH. The Rev. H. W. Hitchcock presided at the annual meeting of the Miramar branch of the Bible Society, and there was a good attendance. The chairman, who took the devotional part of the meeting, also paid a high tribute to the work of the society, and introduced the Rev. D. Calder, Dominion secretary, who delivered a lecture tracing the history of the society. At the close the chairman thanked the speaker, and a warm vote of thanks was passed with acclamation. The following officers were elected:— President, Airs. Brash (re-elected); vicepresident, Airs. A. Brown; secretary, Master Alan Brash. At the conclusion of the meeting all adjourned to the hall adjoining the church, where a dainty supper was served by the Presbyterian Women’s Alissionary Union ladies with Mrs. Wiltshire. During the supper the Dominion secretary introduced Miss Violet Taylor, who has just arrived from England, and who is taking up the work or organising secretary for the Taranaki district and the northern part of the Wellington province. Miss Taylor expressed the great pleasure it gave her to be present, and thanked all for their hearty welcome. Mrs. Porter congratulated the members upon the growth of the work in the district, paying a very high tribute to the untiring efforts of their enthusiastic president, Mrs. Brash. Two songs by Airs. Henderson (accompanied by Miss Taylor) received very hearty applause. JOHNSONVILLE BRANCH. The annual meeting at Johnsonville was well attended, and was held in the Methodist schoolroom, which was arranged with beautiful flowers in bowls. Airs. Porter thanked all for their fine and self-sacrificing work and gave the latest details of the world growth of the society, mentioning specially the circulation, translation, and revision. Mrs. Porter introduced Mrs. David Calder, who took for her subject, “Bible Society Workers I met in the East.” An account of a visit to Jerusalem was given and well-known workers were described, the whole making a delightful ddress, which was listened to with great interest At the close a hearty vote of thanks was accorded the speaker. The election of officers for the ensuing year resulted as' follows:—President Airs. .G. Jones (re-elected) ; secretary. Airs. Rodda (re-elected). Both president and secretary received a warm vote of thanks for their tireless, persistent, and able work.

Pleasure was expressed when it was made known that the following had consented to collect:—Afcsdames Embury, Watson, Mcßride, Alarkle, Martin, McCristall, Afoore, King, Wilson, Willetts, and Misses Checsman and Joyce, Rice. Afternoon tea dispensed by the committee brought the afternoon to a close. W.N.R. Afrs. L. O. H. Tripp presided at the quarterly meeting of the headquarters executive of the Women’s National Reserve. Alesdames A. Gibbons and Otway were elected vice-presidents. Satisfactory reports from the heads of the various activities were received. Miss Wiltshire was elected to carry on the work of the welfare branch during the absence of Afrs. Guthrie in Vancouver, The chairman announced that Mrs. Hadfield had been elected secretary and treasurer of the Karori memorial cemetery committee. Mrs. Porter thanked those who had helped as individuals with the obstetrical chair fund, and read reports from the outlying districts of the splendid work done. Mrs. Tripp congratulated the members upon the results of "poppy day.” Mrs. Ralph Brown, of St. John’s Hill, Wanganui, is the guest of her mother, Afrs. Kirker, Salamanca Road. Many of the parishioners of Patea attended an “at home” given by the vicar, the Rev. Mr. Gibson, and Mrs. Gibson, recently, to commemorate the baptism of their son, Paul. Afrs. Hamertbn. on behalf of those present, presented the baby with a silver spoon and fork and serviet t, > ring.

CHARITY BALL One cl the first large dance# of the season in Wellington will be the annual Charity Ball, which this year will be held to-night at the Town HalL Fostered by an enthusiastic committee, tins ball has grown in importance and is now looked upon as one of the biggest events of the year. A meeting of the ball committee was held this week juki reports were received from thevarious sub-committees. The e „“ ' „ sponsible for the decoration of the lown Hall -and Concert Chamber has its duties well in hand and the artistic arrangements should contribute greatly to the success of the ball. In connection with the presentation of debutantes to his Grace the Archbishop, the secretary reported that 53 young ladies would be presented. This is far in excess of the number in previous years and this feature of the ball is of special interest. Onlookers tickets for admission to the gallery are obtainable for a small charge, plus an addition for reservations. They are in great demand and it is expected that the gallery will bo full. PROVINCIAL ITEMS Ntr. and Afrs. J. Boyce have returned to Glen Oroua after a visit to New Plymouth. Mrs. M. Marsack, of Auckland, is the guest of Mrs. Scott, of Victoria Avenue, Palmerston North. Afrs. S. Davis, of Napier, is the guest of her mother, Mrs. Crosse, of Broadway Avenue, Palmerston North. Afrs. Haggitt and Aliss Otalie Haggitt, of Palmerston North, have returned from a visit to Auckland. Mrs. J. Bond, of Hawke’s Bay, has returned home after a holiday spent with her relatives at New Plymouth. Miss May Akers, of Palmerston North, is the guest of Aliss Jean Speedy, of Takapau. Mrs. Malcolm Brodie, of Hastings, has returned from Palmerston North, where she has beeji undergoing treatment in a private hospital.

Miss Biddy Shaw has returned to her home in New Plymouth, after spending a holiday in Palmerston North, where she was the guest of Mr. and Airs. F. Coombs, of Russell Street. Mrs. Norman Gorton, of Feilding. is visiting her daughter, Mrs. Oswald Meyrjck, of Pahiatua Track, Aokautcre. z Mr. and Mrs. J. Turner have returned to the Wairarapa after a visit to Palmerston North. Mrs. R. Edwards, of Palmerston North, has gone to visit her sister in Taranaki for a few days. Mrs. R. Cartefr, of “Roshill.” Sandon Road, Feilding, is the guest of Dr. and Mrs. Henry, of Wellington. Mr. and Mrs. J. Smith, of Roberts Line, Palmerston North, have returned from a visit to New Plymouth. Mrs. Edgar Wylis, of Wadestown, Wellington, spent a few days in Palmerston North on her way through to Napier by motorcar. At the monthly meeting of the Wanganui branch of the Plunket Society the Plunket nurse gave the following figures: Old cases on books during Alay, 725; new cases, 79; visits to headquarters and offices, 1271; visits to homes, 482. Pre Natal: new cases, 4; return visits, 15; outside visits, 2. The Stewart Karitane Home report gave the following particulars:—Number of babies admitted, 9; number of babies discharged, 17; number of mothers admitted, 6; number of mothers discharged, 7; largest number in any one day: mothers, 4; babies, 21. There was one death during the month, that of a baby who died two days after admission. Patients were admitted from To Kuiti, Levin, Opunake, Wanganui, New Plymouth, Hawera and Wanganui. The following donations were acknowledged with thanks:—Mrs. Salmon, £1; Anonymous, £l/1/-; and from Well-wish-er, £1 (towards the building fund). The annual meeting will be held at the Victoria League Rooms on June 27 at 3 p.m.
