TO ATTACK MOUNT
KINCHINJUNGA PARTY’S PREPARATIONS ROUTE TO SUMMIT By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright (“Times” Cables) London, May 14. Messages from the Kinchinjunga base camp, dated April 29, state that the party is enjoying the last of four days of a holiday Dr. Dyhrnefurth ordered to enable them to overcome the fatigues of the journey. Preparations for the attack on Kinchinjunga are being completed, even to Dr. Richter’s drawing two hundred cubic centimetres of blood from some of the climbers to prevent insidious altitude effects, after which they will swallow pills to regain the lost blood. Dr. Dyhrenfurth has decided that the only practicable route to the summit is up the northern ridge. He proposes to establish Camp No. 3 at. an altitude of 24,000 feet, probably in a hole in the ice cut out of the glacier at the end of the first terrace leading to the ridge, with an ice staircase with handropes. After this there will be two more camps, the last a thousand feet below the summit. If it is possible to reach the final terrace and establish this camp, it is practically certain that, given good weather, the summit can be gained. [Mount Kinchinjunga is computed to be 28.225 feet and Mount Everest 29,141 feet.] ______________
