ENGLISH RUGBY TEAM

Sir, —I read with amusement “Briton’s” letter in Tuesday’s “Dominion,” headed “English Rugby Team.” Apparently the horrid word “Britisher’ is anathema to him. Twice in his letter he uses the adjective “British.” If' he desires to use- the correct noun “Briton,” sub-edit-ors, sporting writers, and reporters please note:—“Prentice (captain) grabbed the ball and the Briton forced his way over the line.” What a Briton 1

However, I must take this ultrapatriot to task for his description “English Rugby team.” Quite a number of New Zealanders are descendants of Welsh, Irish, and Scottish forbears, and are under the impression that this is a British Isles team. The Hip-Ray, Hip-Ray, Hip-Ray (not Hip, hip, ray) of the New Zealand Rugby team is not Yankee (horrid word). From the staccato ejaculations of the Maori haka so proudly declaimed by all our teams has evolved this purely New Zealand cheer.—l am, etc., NEW ZEALANDER. Wellington, May 14.
