SCHOOL SPORTS
CHAMPIONSHIP MEETING MANY COMPETITORS It was fortunate that weather eonditionts held good until late yesterday afternoon at the Basin Reserve, where the Wellington Public Schools’ Amateur Athletic Association held its annual interschool sijorts meeting. Many hundreds of school children, from the most diminutive to the seniors, spent the whole day on the grounds, and the entries received for the long list of events were very large. It is greatly to the credit of the officials that the meeting went through without a hitch. The children put up surprisingly good performances, and showed clearly that the future of athletics in this country is secure. Towards the end of the afternoon excitement began to run high since Khandallah, Newtown, and Rongotai Schools had each about the same number of championship points. Khandallah won, with the good total of 52, and took the championship from Newtown, who had held it during the past year. Previous holders were: 1920, Clyde Quay; 1921, Newtown; 1922, Hataitai; 1923, Newtown; 1924, Muritai; 1925, not held ; 1927, Terrace; 1928, Hutt Central; 1929, Newtown. The 1930 championship points in detail are as follow: — Khandallah, 52 points .... 1 Newtown, 51 points 2 Rongotai, 48 points 3 Terrace, 44 points 4 Brooklyn, 43 points 5 Karori, 41 points 6 Lyall Bay, 36 points ....... 7 Kilbirnte, 84 points ....... 8 Roseneath, 1 S 3 points .... 9 .Clyde Quay and • Hataitai, 30 points 10 Th» Newtown Old Pupils’ Association was enterprising enough to put up a tent on the ground where Newtown school children could obtain refreshments free. The remainder of the children managed their lunch as best they could, although quite a number had disposed of it before the middle of the morning.
