FIRE IN CITY

TWO HOUSES DAMAGED Two houses in Torrens Terrace (off Webb Street), No. 17 and No. 19, were damaged by fire early last evening. Just before 6 p.m. the fire brigade was summoned to No. 17, and had also to attend to No. 19, to which the flames had spread. Both are two-storied wooden structures containing five rooms, and both are owned by Mr. Walter J. Reading, of New Plymouth. No. 17 is unoccupied, and No. 19 is run as an apartment house by Mrs. May Gosling. No. 17 was severely damaged by fire and water, and in No. 19 the walls and ceilings of the pantry and the sittingroom. on the first floor, were damaged by fire, water, and cutting away. The contents of the rooms on the first floor were damaged by heat, smoke, and water- The lower portion of No. 19 is occupied by a Mr. Merrick, whose rooms were also damaged bv heat, smoke and water. Insurai are not yet available. It is understood that workmen were renovating No. 17 yesterday.
