REAR-ADMIRAL BYRD

VISIT TO ROTORUA LAST DAYS IN DOMINION Travelling in the Ministerial coach Rear-Admiral R. E. Byrd, accompanied by Mr. Russell Owen, staff reporter of the “New York Times,” and Mr. D. Ardell, of the Internal Affairs Department, left by the Auckland express yesterday afternoon for Rotorua. Mr. William C. Haines, chief meteorologist of the Byrd Antarctic expedition, left Wellington on Thursday afternoon, and is travelling to Rotorua by car in company with Dr. E. Marsden, Director of Scientific and Industrial Research, and Dr. E. Kidson, Dominion Meteorologist, who are taking the opportunity of discussing with Mr. Haines meteorological problems of Antarctica and New Zealand. Mr. Richard W. Konter, assistant supply officer of the expedition, is travellington to Rotorua in the motor-car placed at Admiral Byrd’s disposal by General Motors, Ltd. Rear-Admiral Byrd and his party will call on the Prime Minister at. Rotorua. They will return to Wellington next Wednesday and on that evening will be tendered at the Town Hall a combined reception, followed by a supper and dancing, by the Eng-lish-speaking Union, the Rotary Club, the Y.M.C.A., Optimists’ Club, the Nary League, the Victoria University Club, the New Zealand Club, the Victoria League, the Returned Soldiers’ Association, and the Institute of Pacific Relations. Sir Michael Myers, Chief Justice, will preside. Rear-Admiral Byrd will leave on Thursday night for Dunedin, where he will finalise the business affairs of the expedition with Mr. H. L. Tapley, and will deliver a lecture, illustrated by film pictures, on his polar expeditions and trans-Atlan-tic flight. He is considering giving the same lecture in Wellington on his return here next week. Admiral Byrd and the remaining members of his expedition will remain about a week in Wellington before sailing on the Rangitiki oh Saturday, April 26, for Panama.
