OBITUARY
MR. WILLIAM MOWBRAY
Mr. William Alfred Mowbray passed away at his residence in Waterloo Road, Lower Hutt, on Saturday. Deceased, who was in his 70th year, had been in failing health for several months.
The late Mr. Mowbray came from an old Wellington family, and was one of the best-known men in New Zealand mercantile circles. Born in Wellington, he was educated at the school at Thorndon of which his father, late Mr. William Mowbray, was principal. While still in his teens the deceased entered, into business with Mr. Phillip Moeller, and later was with Mr. W. H. Levin, and when the firm of W. H. Levin and Co. was formed be became a director. His connection with the business dated over fifty years. He was also a director of several other companies, and was keenly interested in the Merchants’ Association, in whose affairs he took an active part. The late Mr. Mowbray served for a time on the Lower Hutt Borough Council, but apart from that he was not actively interested in public affairs. An enthusiastic follower of horse racing, he was a member of the Wellington Racing Club for many years. His personal popularity was very wide, and he endeared himself to many.
The late Mr. Mowbray was single. Messrs. Ernest and Herbert Mowbray, of Lower Hutt, are brothers, and Mrs. H. Myers (Heretaunga) and Mrs. Barthorp (Lower Hutt) sisters.
