YACHTING

EVANS BAY RACES VIOLA WINS KEELERS HANDICAP Evans Bay presented an animated appearance on Saturday afternoon when the Evans Bay Yacht and Motor-boat Club was able to dispose of two events—that for keel yachts, and a general centreboard handicap—off its racing programme. Tlie day was well-nigh perfect for yachting, and a good stiff sailing breeze from tlie north kept the crews of the smaller craft busy when they caught the wind in the middle of the bay. Altogether the entries were very satisfactory, there being eight starters in the keel yachts race, and fourteen in the centreboard class. The Marangi was unlucky in not being able to annex the first place in her class, and although she was actually the first boat home, the premier position was awarded to Viola on corrected times. On her return down the bay the Marangi made truly a beautiful picture as she gracefully ploughed her way through the waters in full racing rig, her large spinnaker giving a most striking appearance. In the centreboard class, the masterly handling of the Jellicoe class boat, Lauchlan’s Jewel, was the subject, of much approving comment, and although first across the line, on corrected times she was placed third. The results of the*day’s events are given below, the placings. finishing and corrected times being given in each case: —

A good start was made at 3 p.m. and Marangi soon stepped into the lead. Most of the boats began with reefed sails, but at the head of the bay they shook out to full sail. Somes Island showed Marangi well in" the lead with Viola next, followed by Galatea and lolanthe. On the lead to Coromandel Buoy, Marangi gradually increased her distance from Viola, both these boats finishing -yvith their topsails set. Some of the boats experienced difficulty in getting away promptly owing to the numerous centreboarders clustering in front of the clubhouse, their sails obscuring the starting discs. The course was set from the clubhouse to the Somes Rock Buoy, thence to the Coromandel Buoy past Point Jermingham back to Evans Bay. The course, which was set round the southern end of the. bay, was as follows: —from the clubhouse to Slip Buoy to Shag Point to bathing sheds to Shag Point to slip' buoy to Shag Point to bathing sheds to Shag Point to slip buoy to Shag Point to bathing sheds back to the clubhouse. On the beat down the bay to the buoy, second time, the Lauchlan’se Jewel was well in the lead followed by Kio II and Little Haste. On the run down to Shag Point, Lauchlan’s Jewel feet her spinnaker early, and virtually ran away from the other boats. Kio II was very slow in setting her spinnaker, waiting until she was well down the course. At Shag Point, she seemed to have trouble with her jib, which probably lost her a couple of minutes, and was passed by Little Haste. On the last time up to slip buoy, Lauch an s Jewel was still leading, followed by Idono, Little Haste, Wellesley 11, and Kio 11. She still bad the lead when rounding the final buoy at the bathing sheds, and after a very fine race, crossed the line first. Corrected times, however, gave Miro with, a handicap of 23 minutes first place.
