MANAWATU GORGE SLIP
METHOD OF CLEARING Dominion Special Service. Palmerston North, January 25. A dam is now to be constructed a quarter of- a mile back in the hills to impound water to clear away the overhanging mass containing, it is estimated, 25,000 to 30,000 cubic yards of clay and rock, .which still threatens the railway line in the portion of the Manawatu Gorge where three slips came down last week. A sluice gun has proved ineffective —its range* being too limited. ' As the dam is 140 feet above the scene of the slip, gravitation will supply sufficient force to wash the debris down the spillway which has been constructed, passing under the railway line and into the river.
