INQUIRY INTO FIRE
SUSPICIONS OF BRIGADE SUPERINTENDENT AROUSED. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Waihi, January 24. An inquiry into the cause and origin of a fire in Adams Street on the morning of December 7, which destroyed an unoccupied four-roomed dwelling owned by Thomas Francis Meagher and furniture owned by his wife, was held before the District Coroner (Mr. W. M. AVallnutt). Sergeant D. B. Calwell, for the police, said that the superintendent of the fire brigade had reported outbreaks of fire in three distinct jilaces and these suspicious circumstances had led to the inquiry. These statements were supported by Constables J. Rosborough and A. R. Rimmer, and the superintendent, in reply to a representative of five insurance companies, gave it as his opinion that the fire had been caused by some person or persons unknown. The inquest is proceeding.
