PROHIBITION LAW

REVENUE FROM LIQUOR TRAFFIC OFFICIALS SENTENCED Vancouver, January 2. A curious phase of the liquor problem is apparent in the Idaho towns of Mullan i and Shoshone. Recently, the Mayor, Aldermen, and Chief of Police of Mullen were indicted and stiffly sentenced for breaking the prohibition laws. The district is a mining centre, with a sparse population, aud the floating community paid no taxes. Tlie aldermen believed that the only way to get money to build highways and schools was to license a number of saloons and speakeasies, which tlie police allowed to operate so long as they paid for the privilege. This scheme worked well enough until Federal agents invaded the territory, and finally sent to gaol till the municipal authorities. The latest development is that the citizens are raising a fund to get their leaders out ot prison, and a petition, widely-signed, is being sent to tlie White House for a pardon.
