FIRE AMONG COAL
factory in danger A TIMELY DISCOVERY Dominion Special Service. Palmerston North, January 5. One of the largest and oldest dairy factories in the district, that of the Farmers’ Dairy Union, in Fitzberbert Avenue, narrowly escaped destruction by iire on Saturday morning, when it was discovered that 50 tons of coal inside the factory were on tire. The discovery was made'at about 5 o’clock on Saturday. When the first early workers arrived on the job, the building was full of smoke, and on the surface of the coal stack being disturbed it was seen that underneath the coal was glowing red hot. A hose was immediately turned on and left on for the greater part of the day. It. took many gallons of water to subduo the fire, which apparently had a'firm grip in tlie centre of the stack and was eating through the coal.
The coal is stored in a huge concrete bin next to the engine-room,-practically in the centre of the factory. How the lire could have started is a mystery. Spontaneous combustion of some kind is suggested as the only solution.
