WAR VETERAN’S DEATH

ORGANISER OF BATTALION OF COWBOYS (Rec. December 31, 10.35 p.m.) Vancouver, December 31. Old John Vicars, a veteran of Indian campaigns and the South African War, jumped into the fray when the Great War loomed, and though terribly over age, organised and went to France with the 122nd Battalion of Cowboys ' and Prospectors from cattle ranges in the interior of British Columbia. Last week he died. His last request was to convey a certain letter to the bandmaster of the regiment.. “Don’t open it until I’m safely lowered into the grave,” ran his instructions. When the envelope was opened it was found to contain the instruction that all the way returning from the cemetery the band must play “Tipperary.” The colonel’s final order was obeyed.
