MINISTER DROWNED IN RIVER

OVERPOWERED BY CURRENT BOY’S ATTEMPT AT RESCUE FAIL By Telegraph.—Press Association. Gisborne, January 1. The Rev. A. A. Barham, curate of Holy Trinity Church, was drowned this afternoon in Rere River. With three boys he went, for a picnic, and two of the boys who could swim went in for a bathe. Mr. Barham walked across the river, which at the spot is about 30; yards wide, safely, but on returning he was seen to be in difficulties, being carried along by the,,current. Three times he went under and came up again. One of the boys secured a hold on Mr. Barham, but could not retain it, Mr. Barham disappearing. The body was recovered some time later.

Mr. Barham came to Gisborne direct from England just over two years ago, and was very .popular in church circles, especially with the younger folk. Deceased, who was about 32 years of age, was unmarried, and had no relations in the Dominion.
