SUMMER GOLF
MIRAMAR NEW YEAR TOURNEY J. L. PETLEY DOES A 74 A DAY OF INCIDENT The annual New Year tournament conducted by the Miramar Golf Club has come to bo regarded as an established and popular fixture. The tourney opened yesterday, and attracted a fair number of entries from outside. The fairways and greens were at their best after the recent generous rains, and all that had to be contended against was a fairly stiff nor’-wester. Chief interest centred in the competition for the championship, which saw some noted players enter the lists. The best round of the da. was recorded by J. L. Petley (Miramar), who, playing against W. D. Cooke, returned a hot card of 74, taking 37 both ways. His figures read as follow: — Out: 445542454 —37 In: 443543365—37 74 A Sensation. The sensation of the day, however, was provided by the veteran J. G. Hughes, who recorded an 80, taking 40 for both the outward ahd inward journeys. With his handicap of 13, this was good enough to enable him to not only outstrip his opponents in the first bogey handicap competition, but to humiliate the Colonel to the tune of 8 down. Another high-light was the defeat of A. B. Conway, of New Plymouth, at the hands of J. Flanagan (Hutt). The New Plymouth man was all at sea on the greens, and had difficulty in even sinking 18-inch putts. L. D. Hurst (Miramar) was in form, and got through the first and second rounds of the championship by recording steady 77’s in both contests. The tourney was excellently managed by that experienced officer, Mr. T. 11. Gibson, secretary of the Miramar Golf Club, who got the large field away for both the morning and afternoon rounds with commendable promptitude. The following are the results: — CHAMPIONSHIP TOURNEY FIRST ROUND. N. A. Arthur (Miramar) beat J. Graham (Feilding); 1 up. L. D. Hurst (Miramar) beat L. C. Hemery (Hutt), 7 and 6. 11. J.
