PETONE BEACH CARNIVAL

SUCCESSFUL NEW YEAR’S DAY Bright sunshine in the morning and afternoon yesterday, and a record number of holiday-makers, combined to make New Year’s Day at the Petone beach carnival easily the most successful since its opening in Christmas week. Before the side-shows and novelty attractions were properly in full swing, large numbers of excursionists from the city and more distant suburbs swelled the .crowd on the beach from minute to minute, and it was apparent before noon that the day would be an excellent, one for everybody. The carnival spirit was abroad. All day long and well into the evening the wide beach was packed with people who'seemed to waver between the attractions of bathing and the attractions provided on shore by enterprising showmen, with their games, competitions, inevitable boxes of chocolates, and all kinds of mechanisms for giving the human frame new kinds of thrill. These showmen all candidly admit that the day’s business was better than that of any day which preceded it. Refreshment stalls were in the hands of the committee formed by the Petone Beautifying Society, and did a brisk trade from the middle of the morning onwards. One of the features of the afternoon was the display of outboard motor-boat racing given by five fast boats from the newly-formed Wellington Outboard Motor-boat Club. Two races were run for cash prizes donated by the Petone Beautifying Society. The results of these were as follow :— PETONE BEAUTIFYING SOCIETY HANDICAP (Six laps, one mile each). Miss John Jameson (P. Jameson), hep. 2min. 15sec. ..... 1 Mischief (E. Ranish), scr. 2 Mayfly (G. Butcher), 20sec 3 Aloha (S. Wilmshurst), scr. 4 Chancit (J. Kilgour), lmin. 30see. .. 5 Winner’s time, 14min. 30sec. A good finish by all boats. PETONE FORESHORE HANDICAP (Six laps, one mile each). Miss John Jameson, hep. lmin. 45scc. 1 Mayfly, 30sec .. 2 Chancit, lmin. 45sec 3 Aloha, ssec. 4 Mischief, scr 5 Winner’s time: 12min. 30s.ee. A very close finish, all boats crossing the mark within half a minute. The racing was first-class from start to finish, and in no way lost anything from the fact that at least one of the drivers was in a boat which was strange to him. Conditions were good, and there was no bad cornering. The handicapping was done by Mr. L. Miniiie, who is handicapper to the club. The carnival, with all its shows and attractions, will continue until next Saturday evening.
