SECOND DAY OF AUCKLAND MEETING ROYAL DOULTON WINS SUMMER CUP SPRINT TO KNIGHTLIKE Improved weather conditions favoured the second day of the Auckland Racing Club’s summer meeting. Dominion Special Service.

Auckland, December 30. The Auckland Racing Club's summer meeting was continued at Ellerslie to-day In line weather. There was a large attendance( and the track was good. The totalisator receipts for the day were £72,075, compared with £44,311 for the corresponding day of last year, an increase of £27,764. The Total receipts for the first two days were £103.404, as against £140,004/10/- for the first two days last year. FERGUSSON HANDICAP. Twelve started In the Fergussou Handicap and Richfield was installed an oddson favourite, nearly twice as well backed as Greenaway, with Imperial, Prince a moderately supported fifth choice at a good price. Spring Abbey/ Some Lady and Imperial Prince were the first to show out, while Relatiou bung at the barrier and lost several lengths. Once they were fairly In line for the post Richfield took charge aud then Imperial Prince appeared on the inside. Imperial Prince finished stoutly under pressure and got up to win by a head from Richfield, who veered outwards under the whip. Greenaway was two lengths away third and Luminary fourth. Then came luku. Llvn Dhu, Always, and, Spring Abbey. Imperial Prince was favoured with a fine run on the rails aud just outstayed Richfield, who might have just won if be had kept absolutely straight in the run home. Greenaway ran another solid race, while Tuku and Luminary again shaped fairly. Relation displayed plenty of pace and should do better over shorter distances. KING’S PLATE. The defection of Eaglet left only three runners in the King’s Plate, and Hunting Cry was entrusted with about £256 more support than Toxeuma, who only bad a slight call over Historic in what was a lint; betting race for the.size of the field. A good start was effected, and Toxeuma was the first to break the line, going out to establish an early lead of two lengths from Historic (rails) and Hunting Cry, who were racing together. Historic was being kicked along to hold his position at the half-mile, and a little further on Hunting Cry began to close on the leader. Hounding the home turn Toxeuma still led Hunting Cry by over a length, with Historic dropping back. Nearing the distance Hunting Cry closed on Toxeuma and gradually forged ahead to win by a neck, Historic being five lengths away third. H. Gray, who rode Hunting Cry, was before the stewards in connection with the I’egaway Inquiry until a few minutes before the starting time, and was given a reception when he went out to take his mount. The applause was renewed when he brought Hunting Cry back to scale. PONSONBY HURDLES. The Fonsonby Hurdles was a good betting rate, with Pangolin, King’s Guard ond Importer all heavily backed. Catouian came down at the third fence. King's .Guard assumed command at the home turn anR was the leader into the. straight from Prince Lu, with Pangolin eight lengths back in third position and then came Importer. Nothing had a chance with King’s Guard, and he ran home an easy winner by seven lengths from Prince Lu, who defeated Importer by nine lengths. Pangolin was a moderate fourth, followed by Rahepoto, Glenotus, Kawini, and Clockwork, who were all a good way back. Catonian broke bis off hind leg when ■ he fell and was destroyed. SUMMER. CUP.' Two defections left fourteen runners in the Summer Cup and it was a splendid betting race, with Pegaway, Star Stranger aud Seatown very heavily backed, and the winner. Royal Doultou, ninth choice at a double-figure price. A good start was effected, Panther, Metry Mint, Amor and Lucy Rose being quickly prominent to lead past the stand from Seatowu, The Hawk and Royal Doultou. Running along the back, Panther and Merry Mint were together in the lead, with The Hawk aud Lucy Bose and Royal Doultou and Star Stranger racing lu pairs next and Pegaway tailed off last. Merry Mint drew out slightly near the five furlong post and showed the way through :he cutting to Lucy Rose, Panther, Loyal Doulton, Amor, The Hawk, Seatown, Verilgern and Star Stranger, with Pegaway turning fast on the outside. The held ipread across the course at the distance, xhere Royal Doulton just led. Royal Doultou stayed on well under pressure to ,vin by a neck from Pegaway, who defeattd Amor by three-quarters of a length. Star stranger was right up fourth, follow>d by Lucy Rose, Vertigern, Merry Mint, the Hawk, Sentown, Panther, and Flying fU The’ winner was always well placed, and tattled on splendidly at the finish. tway was last until five furlongs i™* ll loiue, when he commenced a remarkable •un on the outside, and came right round he held. His performance was one or considerable merit. Star. Stranger was anchor who impressed. CRITERION HANDICAP. The moderately fancied Ten terdeo won it a good price in the Criterion Handicap. ?euterden was first into the straight, closev attended by’ Open Cheque and Bettcriient, with Hard Words showing up on the »utside and Awaken, Biddy’s Boy, Oil <ihg and Tremetus following. Once in ine for the post, Awaken challenged and ben Tremetus came on inside, Tentcr- • len was still in charge inside (he distance .nd stayed on to win by half a length rdiu Awaken, who beat Tremetus by a WAITEMA.TA HANDICAP All started in the Waltemata Handicap. Juellona was made an odds-on favourtv, being well over twice as well sup»ortcd as the second’ choice, Prince of grange, who had a good call over Antique. A good start .saw Nassau Lady, Bea Song, ad Duellona begin quickly to (cud past the stand from Pedestal, Mon . Star and Prince of Orange. Nassau Lady and Sea Song were the first into the straight, closely followed by Pedestal, who was beaten here, Duellona, Prince of Orange, Thurnus and Antique. Nearing the distance, Duellona tackled Nassau Lady and Sea Song, and a little further on Antique challenged on the inside. Duellona was slightly in front fifty yards from the post and similar margin, won by a neck from Nassau Lady, with Antique, another neck away, third. Prince of OVange, who put up Sib. overweight to secure the services of H. Goldfinch, was fourth, and then came Motere, Thurnus, Sea Song, Pedestal and Nassoek. Duellona was a class above the others, Although she had very little to spare at tiic finish. Nassau Lady was always in the picture, and Antique finished on well. After being well back in the middle stages, prince of Orange ran a solid race, but Sea Song failed to stay on. Motere mot with some interference near the five-furlong post, otherwise he would have been closer. ‘ ELECTRIC HANDICAP. Heavy wagering on the Electric Handicap saw Great Star a hot favourite over Cimabue and Knightlike. Knightlike did best over the last half furlong to win by a head from Leitrim, with Polyxena two lengths away third. Cimabue was close up fourth, succeeded by Awarere, Lady’s. Hoy. Tukutama and Great Star. The winner was nicely ridden by H. Wiggins, and finished on well. PLUNKET HANDICAP. The Plunket Handicap was a great betting race. Goshawk being about .£5OO better backed tlfati Royal Parade, with the Ti Tree -Le Choucas bracket also heavily backed. The field carried the tapes away at the start, and as a result Le Choucas, who was caught, had his chance extinguished. Once in a lino for the post, the loaders bunched, and in a great race home Hyde Park stayed on to win by a neck from Goshawk. King Emerald was half a length away third, aud Ti Tree right up fourth.
