CHRISTMAS CHEER FOR CHILDREN

COMMERCIAL TRAVELLERS’ ANNUAL EFFORT SUM OF £675 DISTRIBUTED One of the most cheering events of the pre-Christmas season is the annual distribution of cheques from the Commercial Travellers’ Association of Wellington to the various orphanages and children’s homes and hospitals fa and near the city. To realise how sorely this largesse is needed one only has to have a very slight inside knowledge ot the management of many of these Institutions. Some of them literally live from hand-to-mouth, and occasionally drop a little behind financially, but whatever the situation may be the Commercial Travellers’ timely gift for Christmas joy—not for the general funds of the institutions—is always timely and most welcome. Each year the travellers promote a “joy night” This year it was No. 9, which clearly indicates how many years this good work has been in progress. Yet despite the munificence of the annual distribution there is always a little to put away to reserve. This reserve now amounts to a very considerable sum, and some time hence it Is hoped that the annual distribution of largesse to the various children’s institutions will be forthcoming out of the interest earned, and independent of “joy nights” (however great a pity that might be). Cordial Thanks.

Owing to urgent private business the president of the association (Mr. Arthur Jacobs) was unable to make the trip yesterday morning. In that regrettable emergency the honours were gracefully done by the vice-president (Mr. W. Hustler Smith), who had the moral support of Messrs. A Smythe, H. Sunderland (“Joy Night” secretary), L. McKelvie, J. K. Mills and J. V. Curtis. The party only visited three institutions on this occasion—viz., the Home of Compassion, at Island Bay, the Levin Home, and the children’s ward at the Wellington Hospital. At each place the travellers’ emissaries were very heartily and sincerely welcomed, and cordially thanked for their handsome donations to the comfort and pleasure of the varidus boys and girls concerned.
